Shopwatch Pilot Scheme: Addressing Anti-Social Behavior Through Community Collaboration

A new initiative aimed at combating crime and anti-social behavior is set to launch in Stirling, with the introduction of the Shopwatch pilot scheme. Spearheaded by Go Forth Stirling, this program is designed to provide retailers with a platform to collaborate and share information in order to address disturbances and improve safety within the community.

Building on the success of Stirling’s Pubwatch system, which has revolutionized communication among pub and club owners, the Shopwatch initiative aims to create a similar network for retailers. By connecting businesses with each other, as well as with the police, the Thistle Centre, and the city’s CCTV system, Shopwatch hopes to empower retailers to work together towards a safer and more secure environment for all.

Project director at Go Forth Stirling, Danielle McRorie-Smith, expressed the importance of this initiative, stating, “We’re launching a pilot Shopwatch scheme for the day-time economy which we hope will be just as successful as the Pubwatch initiative has been for the night-time economy. This is an important investment which will make a significant difference to communications between businesses and build confidence in Stirling’s economy.”

To facilitate communication among participating businesses, Go Forth will subsidize a network of two-way radios for BID (Business Improvement District) businesses. Additionally, training and information sessions will be organized to ensure that all involved parties are equipped to effectively utilize the Shopwatch system.

Regular meetings will be held for retailers to discuss concerns and share information regarding anti-social behavior issues they have observed. This collaborative approach will not only enhance communication among businesses but also strengthen the partnership between retailers, police officers, and other organizations working towards a safer community.

In collaboration with Retailers Against Crime (RAC), Shopwatch participants will have access to SentrySIS, a crime-fighting system that allows business owners to report incidents, warn others, and create evidence logs. This integrated approach will enable businesses to respond swiftly to real-time incidents and provide valuable information to law enforcement and youth justice teams.

With several businesses already signed up for the pilot program, Go Forth aims to have at least 15 businesses involved to ensure the system’s effectiveness. By encouraging independent traders to join Shopwatch, the initiative seeks to foster a sense of community and collaboration among business owners to enhance Stirling’s reputation as a safe and thriving destination.

Danielle McRorie-Smith emphasized, “I hope many of our independent traders will join Shopwatch and collaborate with us and other business owners to help make Stirling an even better destination for visitors, residents, and businesses alike.”
