A new direct train service between Stirling and London is set to launch next summer, aiming to enhance tourism and provide passengers with more travel options. The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has approved Grand Union Trains’ plans to introduce four return services per day between London Euston and Stirling stations, with stops at various locations including Milton Keynes Central, Nuneaton, Crewe, Preston, Carlisle, and more.
This new service will not only connect Stirling to London but will also provide direct services to Larbert, Greenfaulds, and Whifflet for the first time. Stirling Council leader Chris Kane welcomed this announcement, emphasizing the city’s strong rail connectivity and the potential benefits for both businesses and tourism. With Stirling celebrating its 900th anniversary this year, the new train service is seen as a valuable addition to attract more visitors to the area.
The introduction of these services by Grand Union Trains marks the first time an open access operator will run trains on the West Coast Mainline. Unlike franchise operators, open access operators like Grand Union Trains operate independently of government funding, focusing on providing passengers with more choices and competitive pricing. ORR director Stephanie Tobyn highlighted the positive impact of open access operators in increasing service options and improving outcomes for rail users.
Overall, the new direct train service between Stirling and London is expected to not only enhance travel options for passengers but also boost tourism in the area. With the support of Stirling Council and the approval of the ORR, this initiative aims to strengthen Stirling’s position as one of the best-connected cities in the country by rail. As the service is set to launch next summer, passengers can look forward to more convenient travel between Stirling and London, as well as new opportunities to explore the surrounding areas along the route.
